About this document
A timesheet logs hours day by day and totals the pay at the rate you set. It fits the arrangement where trust is fine but memory isn't — contract work, part-time help, or your own billable hours on a project.
When to use it
- Hourly work that gets invoiced or paid out later.
- A helper or contractor whose hours you approve weekly.
- Your own time on a project you'll bill or account for.
Getting it right
- Log daily, not from memory on Friday — the gap between those two is where disagreements live.
- Keep descriptions short but real ("counter install — day 2") so the total has a story behind it.
- Agree the rate before the week starts, and put it on the sheet, not in a chat thread.
It's a record of hours at a rate — it doesn't apply overtime rules or employment classifications, which depend on the arrangement and the rules that govern it.
Common questions
- Does it calculate overtime?
- No — it multiplies hours by the single rate you enter. If some hours are worth a different rate, give them their own rows.
- Is this a payroll document?
- It can feed one, but it isn't one — payroll involves withholdings and rules this sheet deliberately doesn't touch.
- Can I enter half hours?
- Yes — hours take decimals, so 7.5 works fine.
