About this document

A quote (or estimate) puts a price on work before it starts, itemized so the client sees what the number is made of. When they accept, one click turns it into an invoice with everything carried over.

When to use it

• A prospect asks "what would this cost?" and deserves a real answer on paper.
• You want scope pinned down before starting — the line items are the scope.
• Comparing bids: clients shortlist the quote they can actually read.

Getting it right

• Put an expiration date on it ("valid for 14 days") — prices age, and an open-ended quote can come back to bite months later.
• Itemize even when tempted to lump-sum: clients argue with totals, rarely with line items.
• Say what happens when the scope changes: a one-line note like "extra visits billed at $X" saves the awkward call.

Quote vs estimate — different documents?

In everyday small-business use they're the same page; some trades treat an estimate as looser. This document works as either — the label you use in conversation is up to you.

The client accepted. Now what?

Use "Turn this quote into an invoice" — client, lines and tax carry over, and you just add the invoice number and due date.

Should I show tax on a quote?
